La Grande Motte : 2009

La Grande Motte was developed in the 1960s and 70s. Population went from 40 to 9000 by the time I visited in 2009 for Tour de France. I wish I could have explored more but I was struck down by Swine Flu and slept in the sun most of the day. Keeping vehicles away from apartments has been tried near where I live in Wybalena Grove, also constructed at the same time. Whether a success or not others can decide. I spent two nights there in Renault Kangoo. First near a disco, second in a beach-side car park. First was noisy with mosquitoes, second quiet with less mosquitoes.

Ile de Noirmoutier : Passage du Gois : Nokia N8

A large and basically flat island off the West Coast of France in the Vendee Region. These days the island is accessed by a well constructed bridge. In days gone by the island was serviced by Passage du Gois, a road inundated by tidal flow twice a day. It was used by Tour de France in 1999 (when there were several crashes) and 2011. There is a footrace held Foulees du Gois which begins at the start of inundation and finishes with full inundation. The island is well known for mining salt marshes, local produce including mussels, seafood in general and vegetables.
